ChatGPT Atlas shutdown checklist

Correction added July 26, 2026: This page originally described Atlas as a knowledge-map feature. OpenAI's documentation does not establish such a feature. The article now records the documented launch capabilities and the scheduled shutdown.

Conclusion: Do not make Atlas a new long-term archive

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Atlas on October 21, 2025 as a macOS browser with ChatGPT built in. Its documented features included an in-page ChatGPT experience, optional Browser memories, and browser agent mode. The launch announcement did not describe an automatic concept-map product that converts all uploaded notes and files into a knowledge graph. OpenAI's launch announcement

OpenAI has since deprecated Atlas and says it is scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026. Bookmarks, open tabs, and browser history may not transfer automatically. OpenAI's shutdown and migration guidance

Shutdown checklist

  1. Export Atlas bookmarks.
  2. Save important open-tab URLs or bookmark them in another browser.
  3. Preserve specific pages you need rather than assuming browser history will migrate.
  4. Treat ChatGPT conversation history and Atlas browser data as separate data sets.
  5. Do not share cookie or session files. They can grant access to signed-in accounts.
  6. Open a sample of the saved links from the destination browser to confirm the export worked.

Choose a replacement by job

OpenAI's current guidance points to the ChatGPT desktop app for deeper browser-agent work and, where available, a ChatGPT Chrome extension or sidebar for assistance while browsing. This does not mean every Atlas feature or data item transfers one-for-one.

  • Storage: export bookmarks and important URLs to a format you control.
  • Conversation: verify ChatGPT history in ChatGPT itself.
  • Automation: limit permissions and review actions, especially on financial, personal-data, or logged-in pages.

Limits and unverified details

As of July 26, 2026, OpenAI's official material does not confirm a complete one-to-one destination for every Atlas capability. The previous claims about concept maps, automatic tagging, and a cross-file “knowledge map” have therefore been removed.

The useful outcome is not continued Atlas use. It is a verified export and a deliberate choice of tools before the scheduled shutdown.
