What Is ChatGPT Health? Features, Eligibility, Privacy, and How It Works

A practical guide to ChatGPT Health features, U.S. eligibility, connected data, privacy controls, and medical limitations.

If you have seen a Health item in ChatGPT—or heard that ChatGPT can connect to Apple Health and medical records—you may wonder how this differs from asking an ordinary health question. Health information often sits across lab reports, patient portals, medication lists, and wearable apps, making it difficult to explain the same background every time.

ChatGPT Health is a feature that lets you connect health information you choose and allow ChatGPT to use that context when organizing and explaining it. It can help you compare results or prepare questions for an appointment, but it is not a diagnostic or treatment service.

This guide uses OpenAI's July 23, 2026 launch announcement, current Help Center guidance, and Health Privacy Notice to explain who can use Health, what it can connect, how permissions work, what happens to the data, and where medical judgment must remain with professionals.

ChatGPT Health Connects Health Context to Your Conversations

ChatGPT Health lets you connect selected health sources and make their information available to ChatGPT with your permission. OpenAI gives examples such as comparing a new lab result with earlier tests, summarizing what changed after an appointment, or considering sleep and activity trends alongside a daily routine.

The Health tab is the home base for managing connected accounts, viewing recent data and trends, browsing synchronized records, and returning to health-related conversations. Once the data has synchronized, however, you are not limited to conversations inside the Health tab. ChatGPT can use relevant Health information in other conversations when you allow it. You can also add @Health to a message when you explicitly want ChatGPT to consider connected health context.

This differs from an earlier experience released to a limited group in early 2026. That version kept the full Health experience inside a separate space. The current OpenAI Help Center article says earlier chats and files remain in a Health Project and do not automatically move into the new Health tab.

Eligibility Is Currently Limited to U.S. Adults

As of July 27, 2026, ChatGPT Health is rolling out gradually to eligible, logged-in users in the United States who are age 18 or older. It is included across the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans and is supported on the web and iOS. Because the rollout is gradual, an eligible account may not see Health immediately.

Connecting Apple Health requires an iPhone. The Help Center also lists a minimum supported ChatGPT iOS app version, so an eligible user who cannot find Health should first update the app and look under More in the ChatGPT sidebar.

For availability in Japan, No official information is currently available to confirm this. The current launch announcement and Help Center documentation specify eligible U.S. users. Readers outside the United States should avoid assuming a launch date and watch OpenAI's official announcement and Help Center pages for changes.

Apple Health and Supported U.S. Medical Records Are Optional

The currently documented sources that users can choose to connect include:

  • Apple Health
  • Medical records from supported U.S. provider portals
  • One Medical
  • Function Health

Medical records may include lab results, visit information, medications, and clinical history. If a wearable, fitness, or nutrition app shares information with Apple Health, that information may also become available to ChatGPT after the user permits access. The exact data varies by app and metric. Proprietary scores that an app does not send to Apple Health may not appear in ChatGPT.

Bringing information together can save repeated uploading and explanation, but synchronization does not guarantee that every record is complete or current. For example, an old medication may still be listed as active. Users should compare important details with the original record and correct current conditions, medication status, or family history when needed.

ChatGPT has read-only access to the documented connected sources. It can use information from medical records and Apple Health in a response, but it cannot update the provider's record or write new information back to Apple Health.

You Choose What to Connect and When It Can Be Used

When Health appears on an eligible account, the basic setup is:

  1. Open Health from the ChatGPT sidebar or the More menu.
  2. Select Get started or the option to connect Health.
  3. Choose only the sources you need, such as Apple Health or Medical Records.
  4. Sign in to the source and review the requested data and permissions.
  5. Wait for synchronization, then review current conditions, medications, and family history.
  6. Decide whether ChatGPT may use connected information in a conversation.

You do not need to connect anything to ask a general health question. Connecting personal data is optional. A cautious approach is to try the intended use without a connection first, then add only a source that provides clear value.

By default, ChatGPT asks for permission before it uses connected Health data to personalize a response. You can approve a single request or allow continued access, and you can change that choice later. Before choosing persistent access, consider whether the device is shared and whether the ChatGPT account has multi-factor authentication enabled.

Training, Ads, and Deletion Depend on Whether Connected Data Is Used

OpenAI states that connected medical records and Apple Health information—and conversations that use that information—are not used to train its foundation models or target ads. ChatGPT conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest, and connected Health information receives additional encryption protections.

The distinction matters: conversations that do not use connected Health data follow the standard model-training choices set for the ChatGPT account. The protection for connected data does not mean that every unrelated ChatGPT conversation automatically follows the same Health-specific handling. OpenAI describes these differences in both the Help Center and its Health Privacy Notice.

Users can disconnect a source at any time under Health's Accounts section. OpenAI says data synchronized from that source is deleted from its systems within 30 days after disconnection. Information already included in ChatGPT conversation history remains until the user separately deletes those conversations.

Conversations that use Health can create memories when memory is enabled, but memories are not created directly from synchronized medical records or Apple Health data. Someone who does not want a conversation to create a memory can use Temporary Chat or disable memory in settings.

ChatGPT Health Does Not Diagnose or Replace Medical Care

The practical benefit of ChatGPT Health is helping users understand information, notice changes, and prepare questions. OpenAI explicitly says the feature is not intended for diagnosis or treatment and does not replace medical care. ChatGPT can make mistakes. A person with urgent symptoms should contact an appropriate emergency or medical service rather than waiting for an AI response.

A useful boundary for lab results and medication information is:

  • Use ChatGPT to explain terminology, organize a timeline, or draft questions for a clinician.
  • Verify values, medication names, doses, and dates against the original record.
  • Do not start, stop, or change medication based only on a ChatGPT response.
  • Leave diagnosis, treatment selection, and urgency decisions to qualified medical professionals.

The consumer ChatGPT Health feature is also not intended for covered entities or clinical use under HIPAA and does not provide a Business Associate Agreement. OpenAI separately offers products such as ChatGPT for Healthcare for eligible clinical settings. Consumer Health and those professional offerings should not be treated as the same product.

Summary

ChatGPT Health lets users connect selected health information so ChatGPT can organize lab results, visit history, sleep, activity, and related context more effectively. As of July 27, 2026, it is rolling out on web and iOS to eligible U.S. users age 18 and older. No official launch timing for Japan is currently available.

Even when the feature is available, users do not need to connect every source. Start without a connection, add only information that serves a clear purpose, and review permissions, memory, conversation history, and deletion behavior. Use ChatGPT for organization and appointment preparation while leaving diagnosis, treatment, and emergency decisions to medical professionals.

The safest first step is not connecting more data—it is deciding what information is genuinely useful and which decisions must never be delegated to AI.
